Here at Tackley CE, we believe that children should be given the opportunity to embed their writing skills and deepen their learning. Because of this, particularly in early years and KS1, the children work on a smaller range of genres but have the opportunity to apply their learning across other curriculum areas.
In all classes, there is an emphasis on precision in all areas of our writing curriculum: planning, composition, grammar, spelling handwriting and redrafting. Through teacher modelled writing and guided writing sessions focusing on children’s precise next steps, children secure their knowledge of age appropriate skills as outlined in the programmes of study for the new national curriculum.
Using a range of high quality texts to engage the children at our school, we aim to inspire the next generation of writers.
Creative Writing Workshops with Cas Lester 2016:
Cas Lester (author of Nixie the Bad Fairy & Harvey Drew series) visited our school for a creative writing day. She spent the morning running an ‘alien writing & mission control workshop’ with Rousham class and spent the afternoon writing spells in Harborne and unravelling Nixie the Bad Fairy in Nethercote.
Cas said: I was really impressed by how much all the KS2 children achieved across the day. Years 5 and 6 romped through a huge amount of work over the morning and came up with some extraordinarily good ideas! So huge congrats to them. Year 3 and 4 children really rose to the challenges I set them and everyone in the class worked hard throughout the session, resulting in some truly original thoughts – all very much their own ideas. KS1 were a hoot – especially making up the Nixie story. And again, I was really impressed by the children – especially the way they all joined in confidently and stayed engaged throughout. All of which contributed to making the day hugely enjoyable for me!
A wonderful day was had by all!
