Welcome to the Summer Term in Ash Class. We are all looking forward to the brighter days and the warmer weather which allow us to spend more time outside enjoying our wonderful school grounds.
This term our main themes are ‘Plants’ and ‘The Great Fire of London’. As part of these topics we will be covering the following books; Jack and the Beanstalk, The Tiny Seed and non-fiction texts connected to The Great Fire of London. If children have any books related to our topics at home and would like to share them with us in school that would be fantastic. All we ask is that books are clearly labelled with children’s names.
Please look at our long-term plan (click HERE) to see what we will be learning about in each subject area in more detail.
Now the weather is warming up, it is important all children bring a named water bottle to school each day. Children will also need a sunhat and sun-cream applied before school begins on sunny days.
Forest School
During the Summer term Forest School will take place on a Tuesday afternoon for Year 1.
Children need to bring old clothes to change into on this day. We go out in all weathers, so please ensure clothing is appropriate for the weather, including welly boots and waterproof clothing if it is wet.
PE
PE is on Wednesdays and Fridays this term. We ask that children come to school in their PE kit which should include a t-shirt to match the colour of the house they are in, jogging bottoms or shorts and trainers.
Homework
English
The most important thing children in Ash class can do at home is read and be read to. The expectation is that children in Key Stage 1 read at least four times a week for 15 minutes. Please make sure that you log in the books they have read in their Reading Diaries. There are certificates of achievement handed out to the children after completing a certain number of reads as well as lovely stickers to stick in their diaries.
The reading books are changed every Friday in Ash class. The children are given two books in line with their reading level and one book of their choice from our Class library. We ask that you make sure all books are returned each Friday so they can be changed for the new set.
Alongside reading their school reading books children should be listening to reading material they are unable to read independently to expose them to the rich language and ideas we find in such books.
Year 1 will also be set Phonics or Spelling homework via Google Classroom each Friday. This will be closely linked to what the children have been learning during their weekly phonics and spelling lessons.
Maths
Children should be spending short bursts of time on Numbots weekly, little and often is the best approach here. There will be maths homework to support the learning that has happened in class that week on Google Classroom that will be set every Friday. This can be uploaded onto Google Classroom when complete, or brought into school.
We are all looking forward to another exciting term in which we hope to spend lots of time outside
in the warmer weather.
Thank you for your continued support.
